What IS that?

Are you new to Jamaican food? Are there things on the menu at Jamaicaway that you are a little shy about tasting? We offer samples of all the foods on our steam table, so the next time you visit us, feel free to ask for a sample!

Johnny Cake
Have you ever tried a Johnny Cake?

What is a Johnny Cake anyway?

Well ... in Jamaica... historically it was a small fried bread that women gave their husbands take with them when they went to the fields to work.

These days plenty of Jamaicans eat them with their meals. They're great for sopping up the sauces that come with our jerk chicken, brown stew chicken, curried chicken, curried goat, or oxtails!

Yum!

We make our Johnny cakes with flour, cornmeal, milk and butter. Then we deep fry them in vegetable oil. A lot of people say they taste like hot water cornbread. Tell us what you think.

Next time you're at Jamaicaway... if you haven't tried a Johnny Cake yet... try one... they come with your meal anyway!

By the way, is there anything on our menu you have a question about? Let us know.

Did you know that when you dine at Jamaicaway you are eating healthy.

We are very conscientious about the quality of the food we serve. We cook with fresh local ingredients whenever we can. Our herbs and spices are fresh. Most of our vegetables are grown locally and ALL of our meats are steroid and hormone free.

We don't cook ANYTHING with any pork products. The oils we use are either vegetable or olive oils.

Most of our food is either steamed or baked and seasoned with our special blend of Jamaicaway spices.

We strive to bring you the healthiest and freshest foods possible.

We have a large selection of vegetarian entrees including soy products, gluten products and tofu dishes.

We make our own fresh juices including sorrel, mango/carrot juice and peanut punch.

We look forward to serving you for lunch or catering your large event.
Thank you SO much for supporting our benefit party Saturday night. About 120 people braved the cold and rain and came to the Nashville Farmer's Market. There was so much great food. If you weren't there you missed patties, curried pockets, meatballs, tuna salad and all kinds of cake!

We partied the night away with live music by BLK Reggae Vibz Band (you can find them on Myspace). DJ Robert Luke spun the music between sets. Thanks again to everyone who supported and attended the party.

We made enough money to purchase a refrigerator to replace the one that was destroyed in the flood.

Last night, we were featured on The Food Network's "Diner's, Drive-In's and Dives". Guy Fieri even made a surprise appearance at Jamaicaway on Friday afternoon. He brought us some of his merchandise to auction off.

The show that features Jamaicaway is called "Wings 'n Things" and will air again:
  • Dec 24, 2010
    9:00 PM ET/PT
  • Dec 25, 2010
    12:00 AM ET/PT
  • Dec 26, 2010

Watch us... Support us...

Well, so far we've been on WSMV Channel 4...
Now Fox 17 (tonight at 9pm) and Newschannel 5 (tonight at 6:30pm) have come by and videotaped us for newscasts airing tonight.
Please watch the stories about us...
After you watch, please support us as we try to recoup from being closed 4 months this summer.

Our Benefit Party is Saturday, December 11th at 6:00 p.m.
We'll have live music, plenty of food and lots of fun!

We're also so excited about being on "Diners Drive-ins and Dives" this coming Monday at 9 p.m.  We made our Mango Chutney Chicken just for (host) Guy Fieri when he came to tape the show here in Nashville. He LOVED it! Mango Chutney Chicken is now one of our best selling dishes. It's tender strips of chicken, breaded, fried and served with a sauce made with fresh mangoes, onions, peppers and spices. It's SO good! If you come to Jamaicaway and order it when its our daily special (usually on Fridays) it comes with 2 sides, bread and FREE fruit tea.

So don't forget, tune in to Newschannel 5 and Fox 17 tonight to see the Jamaicaway story... then come get your tickets for our Benefit Party.

Counting down the days...

Jamaicaway is working to recover from the spring 2010 flood. In 5 days we will be featured on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" with Guy Fieri. The show was scheduled to air this past spring... but the flood closed Jamaicaway for 4 months and so the show has been on hold all this time.

We will be on "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" on Monday, December 13th at 9pm... but before that nationwide premiere... we are hosting a Benefit Party this weekend. The tickets are for a worthy cause, they will help keep the restaurant afloat during the slow winter season.

You can help Jamaicaway out by making a donation or purchasing a ticket for $25. The Benefit Party is going to have live music, dancing and TONS of food! Picture the tables filled with cocktail patties, mango chutney chicken, plantains, fritters and much, much more!

Right now, as I'm typing this blog, Newschannel 5 is here in the restaurant doing a story on Jamaicaway. It will air tonight at 6:30 p.m. (follow us on Facebook and Twitter for all of our latest happenings).
