Johnny Cake |
What is a Johnny Cake anyway?
Well ... in Jamaica... historically it was a small fried bread that women gave their husbands take with them when they went to the fields to work.
These days plenty of Jamaicans eat them with their meals. They're great for sopping up the sauces that come with our jerk chicken, brown stew chicken, curried chicken, curried goat, or oxtails!
Yum!
We make our Johnny cakes with flour, cornmeal, milk and butter. Then we deep fry them in vegetable oil. A lot of people say they taste like hot water cornbread. Tell us what you think.
Next time you're at Jamaicaway... if you haven't tried a Johnny Cake yet... try one... they come with your meal anyway!
By the way, is there anything on our menu you have a question about? Let us know.
We are vegans and were just looking at your menu and it looks like you have a lot of fantastic options for vegans. I love Caribbean foods and make a vegan version of peanut punch! Love sorrel drink too. We will have to come and try your offerings. I wish you would come to the annual Earth Day Festival in Centennial Park in April and the Festival of Cultures in October. You would sell a lot more than the vendor fees and your food would be a big hit.
